Gero Onsen Gassho-mura Village

Gero Onsen Gassho-mura Village is an outdoor museum featuring 10 authentic gassho-zukuri thatched houses relocated from the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama. These traditional structures were saved from flooding when a dam was constructed in their original locations, with 90% of the buildings coming from the famous Shirakawa-go area. The village recreates a historic mountain settlement, offering visitors an immersive glimpse into traditional Japanese rural life without traveling to the original remote locations.

The centerpiece is the Former Odo House, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property built over 13 years from 1833 to 1846. This massive structure measures 21 meters wide, 12.3 meters long, and 13 meters high, once housing 19 families with two-thirds being women. The building showcases original agricultural tools and silk production machinery through mannequins and historical displays. Other significant structures include the Iwasaki House, a folk museum displaying traditional farming implements, and the Toyama House with its distinctive Itakura wooden plank storehouse dating to 1810.

Visitors can participate in traditional craft workshops at the Hida Kobo, creating pottery, painting ceramics, making Japanese washi paper, and crafting Sarubobo dolls (traditional Hida region amulets). The pottery painting experience takes 30-40 minutes and costs from ¥1,300, while Sarubobo making costs ¥1,800 for regular colors or ¥2,100 for gold and silver. The village also features the Shirasagi Theater, which hosts traditional performances throughout the year, and the Enku House, displaying approximately 30 Buddhist statues carved by the traveling monk Enku (1632-1695).

Additional attractions include a 175-meter mountain slope slide (¥100 per ride, ages 3 and above), a foot bath using authentic Gero Onsen hot spring water, and the Saijiki no Mori forest featuring seasonal cherry blossoms and maple trees. The Ideyu Morning Market operates from April to November, selling local produce and specialties including tomatoes, blueberries, and shimeji mushrooms.

The village is located in Gero, Gifu Prefecture, approximately 6 minutes by bus or 20 minutes on foot from JR Gero Station. Nohi Bus service runs approximately once per hour with departures starting at 9am and continuing hourly until 4:40pm. The facility is open daily from 8:30am to 5pm (admission until 4:30pm), with slightly reduced hours from December 31 to January 2. Admission costs ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children. Gero Station is accessible from Nagoya (90 minutes by JR Hida Limited Express, ¥4,500) and from Takayama (45 minutes by limited express, ¥2,000).
