Sounzan Station

Sounzan Station sits at an elevation of 1,044 meters on Mount Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture, serving as a critical transportation hub in the Hakone region. The station was established in 1959 as the upper terminus of the Hakone Tozan Cable Car and marks the starting point for the Hakone Ropeway. The station's primary significance lies in its role as a gateway to Hakone's volcanic landscape and natural wonders. From here, visitors can access the dramatic Owakudani Valley, known for its active sulfur vents and hot springs formed by volcanic activity approximately 3,000 years ago. The Hakone Ropeway from Sounzan to Owakudani runs approximately every minute during peak hours. Most visitors use the Hakone Free Pass, which provides unlimited access to these transportation modes along with other area attractions. The station is accessible year-round, though ropeway services may be suspended during adverse weather conditions or periods of heightened volcanic activity. No admission fee is required to access the station itself, only the respective transportation fares.
