Iwami Town

Iwami Town centers around the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, designated in 2007 as Japan's most significant historical mining complex. During the 16th century, approximately one-third of the world's silver supply originated from these mines, making them crucial to global trade networks. The mines operated continuously for nearly 400 years from the early 16th century, representing one of the most complete examples of a silver mining landscape anywhere in the world.

The heritage site encompasses three distinct areas that showcase different aspects of the region's mining history. The Silver Mine area includes original mine shafts and ruins from the mining period, complemented by several temples and shrines. The historic Omori Town area preserves traditional merchant residences, now converted into museums, alongside religious sites that served the mining community. The third area features the onsen town of Yunotsu and associated port communities that facilitated silver transport.

Visitors can explore the Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Center, which serves as the primary introduction to the site's history and significance. The center features exhibits, dioramas, and occasional live performances depicting miner family life during the Edo period. Hands-on workshops allow visitors to create Chogin silver coins using traditional methods, though advance reservations are required. The nearby Omori Town retains its historic atmosphere through narrow streets lined with well-preserved buildings from the mining era.

The region is also renowned for Iwami Kagura, one of Japan's oldest performing arts with origins in ancient Shinto shrine festivals. This traditional dance form uses distinctive masks crafted from locally produced sekishu washi paper, making them lighter for performers while allowing intricate detail. Visitors can participate in mask-painting workshops to create their own kagura masks.

Transportation to Iwami requires taking JR trains from Matsue to Odashi Station, a journey of 45-90 minutes costing 1,170-3,000 yen depending on train type. From Odashi Station, local buses operate regularly to both the World Heritage Center and Omori Town, with the journey taking approximately 25-40 minutes. The nearest airport is Izumo Airport, approximately 75 minutes by air from Tokyo. The site requires substantial walking, particularly to reach the mine shafts, so comfortable footwear and appropriate clothing are essential for the full experience of this remarkable historical landscape.
