Kikugahama Beach

Kikugahama Beach is a beautiful sandy beach located near the ruins of Hagi Castle in Yamaguchi Prefecture, running east to west along the northern edge of the historic city facing Hagi Bay. The beach is situated within Kita-Nagato Kaigan Quasi-National Park and has been chosen as one of Japan's Best Beach 100, recognized for its distinctive clear seawater and pristine white sand bordered by twisted pine trees.

The beach holds deep cultural significance as part of Hagi City, a well-preserved castle town that played a crucial role in Japan's transition from the Edo period to the modern era. Five sites in Hagi, including Hagi Castle town, have been registered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, making Kikugahama Beach an integral part of this historically significant landscape. The beach affords excellent views of Mt. Shizuki, the former site of Hagi Castle to the west, Mt. Kasayama on the peninsula to the northeast, and various nearby islands.

Visitors can enjoy swimming, beach sports, and leisurely strolls along the soft white sand, with the beach being particularly renowned for its breathtaking sunsets that often display dramatic pink hues and cloud formations, especially in summer and autumn. The beach serves as the venue for the annual Hagi Nihonkai Grand Fireworks Festival held every August 1st, featuring 7,000 fireworks launched against the backdrop of the Sea of Japan.

Kikugahama Beach is easily accessible from Hagi's city center, located just a 10-minute walk or short bike ride from the Hagi Castle Town area. Outdoor showers, toilets, and parking facilities are available at Kikugahama parking lot toward the west end of the beach, in the direction of Hagi Castle. Visitors can reach the area by taking a bus to Hagi Bus Centre, followed by a 23-minute walk. The beach is free to access and open year-round, making it an ideal destination for both historical exploration and natural relaxation.
