Ono Shrine, Ritto

Ono Jinja Shrine is a small soja located at the foot of Mt. Konzesan in Ritto City, Shiga Prefecture. A soja is a type of shrine that enshrines multiple gods in one location, historically serving as a central place of worship for a region. The shrine's principal deity is Sugawara no Michizane, and according to shrine tradition, it was established in the third year of Tentoku, which corresponds to 959 CE.

The shrine's most significant cultural asset is its tower gate, which has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Constructed during the Kamakura period between 1192 and 1333, it holds the distinction of being the oldest tower gate in Shiga Prefecture. This ancient structure serves as a testament to the shrine's long-standing presence in the region and its architectural importance.

Despite its modest size, Ono Jinja attracts numerous visitors from across Japan and internationally, particularly gaining prominence among fans of the Japanese pop group "Arashi". The shrine's popularity stems from its name connection to Arashi member Ohno Satoshi, as well as the fact that the head priest's name is Ohmiya Satoshi, which combines elements of two Arashi members' names. The shrine offers special talismans themed around the pop group's members, making it a pilgrimage site for devoted fans.

To reach Ono Jinja Shrine, take the JR Biwako Line to Kusatsu Station, then board a bus for approximately 35 minutes. After alighting at the Community Center Konze bus stop, the shrine is a 15-minute walk away. The shrine is located at 896 Arahari, Ritto City, Shiga.
