Hakusan Island

Hakusan Island stands as a symbol of Yura Beach in Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, formed by volcanic eruptions approximately 30 million years ago. The island measures 72 meters high with a circumference of 436 meters, making it a compact yet distinctive coastal landmark often referred to as the "Enoshima of Tohoku."

A striking 177-meter-long red bridge connects the island to the mainland sandy beach, creating a photogenic gateway that becomes particularly atmospheric during summer evenings when illuminated. The bridge serves as the primary access point to this uninhabited island, which has developed into a popular destination for families and nature enthusiasts.

At the island's summit sits Hakusan Shrine, accessible via 263 stone steps that wind upward through the terrain. The climb rewards visitors with panoramic views across the Sea of Japan, offering a contemplative space that holds cultural significance for local communities. Historical legends connect the island to a prince who sought refuge here before becoming a monk and establishing the shrine, and the site is believed by locals to be associated with relationships and connections.

The Yura Ocean Fishing Hole on the island offers recreational fishing experiences, while the surrounding Yura Beach provides swimming during warmer months. Travelers arriving by public transport should take the Shonai Kotsu bus bound for Atsumi Onsen from JR Tsuruoka Station, alighting at Yura Post Office bus stop after approximately 45 minutes. The island is then a 3-minute walk from the bus stop. The bus fare from Tsuruoka Station costs 820 yen. Those driving can reach the destination via National Route 7 from Tsuruoka IC on the Yamagata Expressway, covering roughly 12 kilometers in 20 minutes. Parking is available near the beach, with both paid options close to the bridge and free parking located south of the island past the post office. Admission to the island and shrine is free.
