Former British Consulate of Hakodate

The Former British Consulate of Hakodate stands as one of Japan's oldest Western-style diplomatic buildings, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the country's opening to international trade in the mid-19th century. Located in the historic Motomachi district of Hakodate, Hokkaido, this elegant white colonial structure was established in 1859 when Hakodate became one of Japan's first ports opened to foreign commerce following the Treaty of Amity and Commerce. The consulate operated continuously until 1934, serving British interests for 75 years during a transformative period in Japanese history.

The building exemplifies British colonial architecture with its distinctive blue-gray roof, white clapboard exterior, and spacious verandas designed to accommodate both diplomatic functions and residential quarters. After extensive restoration work, it reopened to the public as a museum, preserving original rooms including the consul's office, reception areas, and living spaces furnished in period style. The consulate's strategic hilltop position in Motomachi reflects the area's historical importance as Hakodate's foreign settlement district, where numerous Western buildings and churches still create a unique cultural landscape.

Visitors can explore exhibition rooms detailing the history of British-Japanese relations, view historical photographs and documents, and experience the consul's living quarters arranged with Victorian-era furnishings. The British-style rose garden surrounding the property blooms magnificently from June through September, providing excellent photo opportunities with views over Hakodate Bay. A tearoom on the premises serves traditional English afternoon tea, allowing guests to enjoy scones and tea in an authentic historical setting while overlooking the garden and harbor.

The Former British Consulate is located approximately 2 kilometers from Hakodate Station. Visitors can take the streetcar to Suehirocho Station and walk about 5 minutes uphill through the atmospheric Motomachi district. Alternatively, buses serve the area with stops near the consulate. Admission costs ¥300 for adults, with reduced rates for students and children. The location combines well with other nearby attractions including the Russian Orthodox Church, Old Public Hall, and the Hakodate Foreigners' Cemetery, all within walking distance in the preserved historical quarter.
