Aharen Beach

Aharen Beach is located on Tokashiki Island, part of the pristine Kerama Islands archipelago approximately 35 kilometers west of Okinawa's main island. This remote beach destination has gained international recognition as one of the world's finest beaches, celebrated for its exceptional water clarity and untouched natural beauty. The beach sits within the Kerama Shotō National Park, established to protect the area's remarkable coral reef ecosystems and marine biodiversity.

The village of Aharen represents traditional Okinawan island life, maintaining its authentic character despite growing tourism. The beach is particularly famous for being a place where visitors can see sea turtles in their natural habitat. The pristine waters surrounding Aharen offer visibility extending up to 30 meters, making it a premier destination for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. About 1 kilometer offshore from Aharen Beach, there is an uninhabited island called Hanare Island, which can be reached by banana boat or sea kayak.

Visitors can experience exceptional snorkeling and diving directly from the beach, with abundant marine life including tropical fish, coral formations, and frequent sea turtle sightings. The calm, shallow waters near the shore make it suitable for swimmers of all abilities. Marine activities such as banana boat rides are available, with shops at the beach entrance offering equipment rentals. The adjacent Aharen village provides authentic cultural experiences with traditional guesthouses, local restaurants, and glimpses of island life that has remained largely unchanged for generations.

Transportation to Aharen Beach requires two stages. From Naha's Tomari Port, high-speed ferries reach Tokashiki Island in approximately 40 minutes, costing 2,530 yen one way, while car ferries take 70 minutes for 1,690 yen. High-speed ferries run three times daily, though between April and November, advance reservations are recommended as many days are fully booked. From Tokashiki Port, shuttle buses transport passengers to Aharen Beach for 400 yen per person, with the journey taking approximately 15 minutes.

Paid facilities including showers, lockers, and toilets are available at the Tokashiki Village Youth Travel Village facility near the beach entrance. The beach offers free access with no admission charges. Visitors should bring sufficient cash as the island has limited ATM access, with one located at the post office operating Monday-Friday 8:45-17:30 and Saturday 9:00-17:00.
