Akasawa Natural Recreation Forest

Akasawa Natural Recreation Forest in Kiso, Nagano is Japan's first designated natural recreation forest, protected since the early Edo period (1603-1867). In the mid-1600s, the forest was placed under strict protection policy by the Owari Domain, establishing a conservation legacy that spans over 400 years. This historically significant forest management system helped preserve what would become one of Japan's most treasured natural areas.

Recognized as one of Japan's three most beautiful forests, Akasawa spans 728 hectares and is home to natural Kiso cypress trees over 300 years old. The Environment Ministry has selected it for its list of One Hundred Most Fragrant Scenic Areas, reflecting both its natural beauty and cultural significance as a protected forest ecosystem. The forest is considered the birthplace of Shinrin-yoku, or 'forest bathing', making it a cornerstone of Japan's wellness tourism movement.

Visitors can explore the forest through seven scenic walking trails that wind through towering cypress groves, each designed to showcase different aspects of the forest ecosystem. The forest offers eight walking courses where strolling is considered to have medicinal effects. A key attraction is the Akasawa Forest Railway, a historic logging railroad that now operates as a scenic ride through the forest, offering visitors a unique perspective on the area's forestry heritage. The railway experience costs ¥500-¥800 for adults and ¥500 for children aged 4 through elementary school.

The forest is open from April 29 to November 7, with free admission to the forest itself. Parking fees apply at ¥600 for standard-sized cars. The forest is located in Agematsu town in the Kiso Valley of Nagano Prefecture, accessible by train to Agematsu Station followed by local transport. Accommodation is available at the Kyoraiso Guest House within the forest grounds, and the facility provides toilets, drinking fountains, and accessible facilities for all visitors.
