Hakodate Port stands as one of Japan's most historically significant harbors, located on the southern tip of Hokkaido. In 1854, it became one of the first Japanese ports to open to international trade following the signing of the Convention of Kanagawa with the United States, alongside Shimoda. The market operates daily and allows visitors to sample local delicacies or enjoy fresh seafood rice bowls. Evening visits offer a different perspective, with the illuminated warehouses and harbor lights creating a romantic waterfront atmosphere.

Hakodate Port is accessible via JR Hakodate Station, located approximately 15 minutes' walk from the main warehouse district, or visitors can take the streetcar to Jujigai Station, which is closer to the Bay Area. The Hakodate Airport lies about 20 minutes from the port by bus or taxi. Most attractions in the port area, including the waterfront promenade and warehouse district, are free to access, though individual museums and facilities within the warehouses charge separate admission fees ranging from ¥300 to ¥800. The area is easily explored on foot, with clear signage in Japanese and English throughout the historic district.
