The day I visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, I met Mr. Mito Kosei near the Atomic Bomb Dome, a retired English teacher from Hiroshima. He spoke fluent English as he shared with foreign visitors the impact and trauma the atomic bombing had inflicted on his family — including himself.
Mr. Mito Kosei mentioned that he had been coming to the park every day for 18 consecutive years, to share his stories. As I listened, I felt that Mr. Kosei resembled the Angel of History, continually looking back at the ruins of history, refusing to be easily carried along by the linear narrative of progress promoted by the official Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and Park.
I’m truly glad to have met Mr. Mito Kosei here. Until we meet again💫
