Hokkaido Jingu Tongu Shrine

Hokkaido Jingu Tongu was built in 1891 as a more accessible branch shrine of the main Hokkaido Jingu located in Maruyama Park. This shrine was constructed using materials from the original Hokkaido Jingu Shrine (formerly Sapporo Shrine), establishing a direct spiritual connection between the two sacred sites. The shrine was created to provide easier access for worshippers during winter months when the main shrine in the hills became difficult to reach.

Hokkaido Jingu Tongu, affectionately nicknamed "Tongu-san" by Sapporo citizens, sits in the heart of Sapporo's city center where the Sosei River flows nearby. The shrine grounds maintain a peaceful, secluded atmosphere despite the urban setting, surrounded by greenery that provides respite from the bustling city. The shrine is particularly renowned for blessings related to easy childbirth and child-bearing, making it a significant pilgrimage site for expectant families.

Visitors to Hokkaido Jingu Tongu can observe the guardian dogs (komainu) that were dedicated in June 1890 by Hideyoshi Watanabe and Kazaemon Shinohara, carved from Sapporo soft stone. These represent the earliest komainu made in Hokkaido and are the oldest in the Ishikari region. The shrine offers traditional worship experiences including purchasing protective charms, writing wishes on wooden plaques (ema), and receiving goshuin stamp commemorations of the visit.

The shrine's central Sapporo location makes it highly accessible by multiple transportation methods. Visitors can reach the shrine via subway, taking the Tozai Line to nearby stations and walking a short distance through the city center. The urban setting allows for easy combination with other Sapporo attractions and provides convenient access to local restaurants and shopping areas. Admission to the shrine grounds is free, allowing visitors to explore the peaceful environment and participate in traditional worship practices without cost.
