Kasuga Taisha in Nara is one of Japan’s most iconic Shinto shrines, located within Nara Park and designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara.”
Architectural Features:
The main hall is built in the traditional Kasuga-zukuri style, featuring gracefully curved eaves and vivid vermilion lacquer. The shrine grounds are surrounded by untouched primeval forest, creating a solemn and serene atmosphere.
Most Distinctive Feature: Lantern Halls and Stone Lanterns
There are approximately 3,000 stone lanterns and bronze hanging lanterns throughout the shrine precincts, most of which were donated by worshippers. During seasonal festivals, all the lanterns are lit, transforming the entire shrine into a glowing labyrinth of light—an awe-inspiring sight.
