Matengai Cliff

Matengai Cliff is a dramatic coastal formation located on Yoron Island, the southernmost island of Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan. Rising approximately 60 meters above sea level, this limestone cliff faces the East China Sea and serves as one of the island's most prominent natural landmarks. The cliff holds cultural importance as a historical site where, according to local legend, women during the Ryukyu Kingdom era would leap to their deaths rather than face dishonor or hardship. This somber history has given Matengai its name, which translates roughly to "cliff of souls" or "spirit cliff." While the historical accuracy of these accounts remains uncertain, the site has become a place of remembrance and reflection, contributing to its spiritual significance on the island.

Visitors to Matengai Cliff can experience panoramic views of the ocean from the observation platform situated at the cliff's edge. Matengai Cliff is located on the eastern coast of Yoron Island, approximately 5 kilometers from Chabana Port, the island's main ferry terminal. The site is accessible by rental car, bicycle, or taxi, with the journey taking roughly 10 to 15 minutes by car from the port. A small parking area is available near the observation point. There is no admission fee to visit the cliff, and the site remains open to the public year-round. Yoron Island itself is reached by ferry from Kagoshima or Okinawa, or by flights from Kagoshima Airport and Naha Airport to Yoron Airport.
