Mikamine Park

Mikamine Park stands as one of Sendai's premier cherry blossom destinations, featuring 750 trees across 48 different varieties, representing the most cherry blossom trees in downtown Sendai. Located in Taihaku Ward on a gentle hill overlooking the city, the park was once the site of an old military school and has also yielded archaeological finds from the early Jomon period. The park's historical layers add depth to its natural beauty, making it a site where nature and history converge.

The park's primary appeal lies in its exceptional cherry blossom displays, which allow visitors to enjoy hanami for approximately one month due to the diverse tree varieties that bloom at different times. The majority of trees are Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms, complemented by weeping cherry trees and other varieties. The elevated position provides panoramic views of Sendai city, creating a scenic backdrop for photography and relaxation. The park's spacious green lawns offer ample room for traditional flower-viewing picnics, recreational activities, and family gatherings.

Visitors appreciate Mikamine Park's relatively uncrowded atmosphere compared to more famous sakura spots in the city. The park includes walking paths, open play areas suitable for children and adults, and well-maintained grounds that attract local birdlife. The cherry blossoms typically spring to life from mid- to late-April each year, with the peak viewing period varying annually. The park remains accessible year-round and serves as a venue for local festivals and community events.

The park is located at 1-15 Mikamine, Taihaku-ku, Sendai and sits approximately 15-20 minutes by car from Sendai Station. Visitors can take the Nanboku subway line to Minami Nagamachi Station from Sendai Station and walk for 23 minutes. Alternatively, buses operate from Yagiyama Station or Nagamachiminami Station to nearby stops. The park is situated next to the Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials at Tohoku University. Admission is free, and the park is open 24 hours daily. During cherry blossom season, food stalls typically appear, though visitors may prefer to bring their own provisions for picnics.
