Suwa Taisha Shimosha Harumiya

Suwa Taisha Shimosha Harumiya is one of the four shrines that comprise Suwa Taisha, considered among Japan's oldest Shinto shrine complexes and first documented in 7th-century Japanese literature. The shrine serves as the head shrine of over 10,000 Suwa shrines across Japan. Located on the northern shore of Lake Suwa in Nagano Prefecture, Harumiya forms part of the Shimosha (lower shrines) together with nearby Akimiya Shrine, while two Kamisha (upper shrines) sit on the lake's southern shore.

Harumiya was the original enshrinement location at Shimosha, holding particular significance within the shrine complex. The shrine follows a unique architectural tradition, lacking a main sanctuary building and instead featuring worship halls. The heihaiden and katahaiden halls of worship are designated as important cultural properties of Japan. The complex features a large granite torii gate and a sacred Japanese cedar tree. Every year on August 1st, the Senzasai ceremony marks the deity's departure to Akimiya Shrine, part of a seasonal rotation unique to Suwa Taisha.

Visitors can explore the riverside shrine complex and examine the historical architecture that mirrors Akimiya's design. The site offers free parking and maintains a peaceful atmosphere along the old Nakasendo Road. Those visiting all four Suwa Taisha shrines can collect red ink stamps at each location to receive a commemorative memento. The shrine remains open year-round and provides an authentic glimpse into ancient Japanese spiritual traditions.

Harumiya is located approximately 20 minutes on foot from JR Shimo-Suwa Station. The shrine grounds are free to enter. A nearby museum related to Shimosha charges admission of ¥300 for elementary and middle school students and ¥500 for high school students and adults. While public transportation serves the area, visiting all four shrines of Suwa Taisha is easier by car, as they are spread around Lake Suwa.
