Tokyo Photographic Art Museum

The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, known locally as TOP Museum, opened in 1995 as Japan's first comprehensive art museum dedicated exclusively to photography and moving images. Located in the Ebisu Garden Place complex in Shibuya Ward, the museum was established to preserve, study, and exhibit photographic works while promoting photography as a significant art form. The facility underwent major renovations and reopened in 2016 with enhanced exhibition spaces and modern amenities.

The museum plays a vital cultural role as Japan's premier institution for photographic arts, housing a collection of approximately 36,000 works spanning from the earliest days of photography to contemporary digital art. The collection includes significant Japanese photography from the postwar period, international masterworks, and an extensive archive of photographic equipment and materials. The museum is located within Ebisu Garden Place, easily accessible via a 7-minute walk from JR Ebisu Station using the moving walkway known as the Ebisu Skywalk, or a 10-minute walk from Daikanyama Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line. Admission fees vary by exhibition, with general admission typically around ¥700-1,000, though special exhibitions may cost more. University students and seniors receive discounted rates, and children under 15 generally enter free for the permanent collection displays.
