Former Tsubokawa Residence

The Former Tsubokawa Residence, locally known as Senko no Ie, stands as the oldest thatched-roof residence in Fukui Prefecture and holds designation as a National Important Cultural Property. Built in the early Edo period, this historic dwelling has survived over 400 years. The residence once belonged to the Tsubokawa family, a high-ranking samurai family that became head of the village approximately 700 years ago.

The structure measures 14.5 meters in width and 10.3 meters in depth, making it exceptionally large for its era. Inside, visitors observe original architectural features that have remained intact since construction, including marks of the axes used when making the pillars and beams. These preserved elements demonstrate traditional Japanese building techniques and offer insights into the lifestyles of powerful feudal-era families.

Visitors can explore the interior spaces of this historic property and appreciate its authentic construction methods. An iris garden situated next to the residence blooms every year in June, creating a scenic backdrop that complements the traditional architecture. The site transforms with the seasons, particularly striking during fall foliage from late October to November. The 32nd head of the Tsubokawa family prepares sobagaki, a traditional buckwheat dish rarely found elsewhere.

The Former Tsubokawa Residence is located at 30-11 Maruokachokamitakeda, Sakai 910-0205, Fukui Prefecture, in the mountainous Takeda area. The site can be reached in approximately 15 minutes by car from the Maruoka Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway. The entrance fee is 500 yen for adults.
