Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden

Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden opened in July 1970 in the Yunokawa hot spring area of Hakodate, Hokkaido. The garden was established as a botanical sanctuary to showcase tropical flora in Japan's northernmost island. In October 1971, Monkey Mountain was added as a dedicated habitat for Japanese macaques, quickly becoming one of the garden's signature attractions. The facility represents an unusual juxtaposition in Hokkaido, offering visitors a warm tropical environment heated by natural hot spring water even during the region's harsh winters.

The garden houses approximately 3,000 tropical plants representing about 300 species within its polygonal greenhouse complex. The collection includes rare specimens seldom seen in Hokkaido, such as the Ice Cream Tree and Breadfruit Tree, alongside tropical fruits like bananas, flowering trees, cacti, and aquatic life including piranhas and tropical fish. The greenhouse maintains warm temperatures year-round regardless of Hokkaido's climate, creating an environment that appeals to visitors seeking respite from cold weather. The Angel Trumpet flowers and diverse plant specimens create a colorful display throughout all seasons.

The primary attraction is Monkey Mountain, where Japanese macaques are visible throughout the year. From December through Golden Week in May, visitors can observe these monkeys bathing in a dedicated hot spring pool, warming themselves during the cold months. This seasonal spectacle draws considerable attention as the macaques spend extended periods soaking in the thermal waters.

Visitors can purchase monkey food for ¥100 to feed the animals. The garden also features free foot baths using natural hot spring water, a water plaza that operates as a pool-like facility during summer months, playground equipment for young children, and battery-powered cars available from April to October for ¥50 per ride. The garden occasionally hosts cultural workshops including photography and pottery classes.

From JR Hakodate Station, visitors can take the Hakodate Tram for approximately 25 minutes to Yunokawa stop, followed by a 15-minute walk. Direct buses from Hakodate Station reach the garden in about 20 to 30 minutes. By car, the garden is approximately 8 minutes from Hakodate Airport. Free parking is available on-site. The admission fee is ¥300 for adults and ¥100 for elementary and junior high school students, making it one of the most budget-friendly attractions in Hakodate. Students attending schools in Hakodate City or residents attending schools outside the city receive free entry. The compact size allows most visitors to explore the entire facility in 45 minutes to one hour.
