Hatonosu Valley

Hatonosu Valley is a scenic canyon located in Okutama, western Tokyo, within the Chichibu Tama Kai National Park. The valley was formed by the Tama River eroding the Chichibu Paleozoic Formation, creating a dramatic landscape of rapids flowing through huge rocks and oddly shaped formations. Despite being within Tokyo's boundaries, this natural retreat offers visitors an escape from urban life with its pristine mountain streams and forested surroundings.

The valley's most prominent feature is the Hatonosu Kobashi suspension bridge, which spans the rushing Tama River below and provides spectacular views of the canyon. The bridge connects both sides of the valley, while below it, the Tama River rushes through craggy rocks. The area is particularly renowned for its autumn foliage, though the verdant landscape in summer offers equally beautiful scenery.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities centered around the 500-meter walkway that follows the river through the valley. The hiking trail is accessible year-round and suitable for all fitness levels, making it ideal for families and casual hikers. The trail connects to the longer Otama Walking Course, which follows the Tama River from Kori to Okutama through well-built trails, mountain roads and suspension bridges. Photography enthusiasts will find numerous vantage points, particularly from the suspension bridge and surrounding elevated trails. Additional attractions include a small Shinto shrine along the trail and fishing opportunities in the clear mountain waters.

Hatonosu Station on the Ome Line provides direct access to the valley, with the trail located just a 3-minute walk from the station. The journey from central Tokyo takes approximately 90 minutes via JR trains. Free parking is available nearby for those traveling by car. The trail itself requires no admission fee, making it an affordable day trip option. Gallery Poppo, a cozy cafe serving organic dishes and homemade sweets, provides refreshment options, while nearby Hatonosu-so offers hot spring bathing facilities with panoramic views of the canyon for those seeking additional relaxation after hiking.
