Kamaishi Daikannon

The Kamaishi Daikannon is a 48.5-meter tall white statue of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, completed in 1970. Commissioned by the 17th monk Untei Seiro of Sekiozenji Temple, the statue stands on a peninsula overlooking Kamaishi Bay in Iwate Prefecture. The monument was erected to comfort the souls of those who died in various natural disasters and to fulfill the wishes of the living. It has witnessed much tragedy in the city below but remains a source of hope for thousands of pilgrims each year.

The Daikannon depicts the "Fish Basket Kannon" holding a fish and faces the sea to watch over Kamaishi's sailors and ensure bountiful catches. This particular form comes from an anecdote from the Tang Dynasty in China about a fish seller's daughter who was actually the Bodhisattva Kannon. The statue's position also represents Kannon's compassion for victims of past wars and tsunamis, offering them passage to nirvana in Buddhist tradition.

Visitors can enter the statue and climb through its interior past statues of the Seven Lucky Gods to reach an observation deck formed by the fish held in the Daikannon's arms. The interior is divided into 13 stories, with the first three floors containing a hall of worship and 33 Kannon statues. The fourth through tenth floors feature the Seven Deities of Good Fortune in sequence. The observation deck on the 11th and 12th floors sits 120 meters above sea level and offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Kamaishi Bay.

Adjacent to the main statue is a stupa built in Indo-Sri Lankan style that enshrines Buddha's ashes. These relics were donated by the Republic of Sri Lanka in 1975. The basement of this temple building exhibits statues of the founders of various sects of Japanese Buddhism. The site also features a heart-shaped monument and a "bell of wishes," as it was designated a "sacred place for lovers" suitable for proposals in 2016.

The Kamaishi Daikannon is located about a 10-minute taxi ride from Kamaishi Station, costing approximately 1,500 yen one way. Alternatively, take the Iwateken Kotsu Bus for 11 minutes to the Kannon Iriguchi bus stop, followed by a 10-minute walk. By car, it takes about 60 minutes from the Kamaishi Expressway Tono IC. Admission fees are 500 yen for adults, 300 yen for junior and senior high school students, and 100 yen for elementary school students. Group discounts are available for parties of 20 or more.
