Let me start with the conclusion: If you are bringing elementary school children and think this temple has something to do with “ninjas,” don’t go. The tour lasts about 30 minutes, the admission fee is not cheap, and the overall experience was terrible.
I visited Myoryuji last year. Before going, I even called to make a reservation. Since I was bringing my 11- and 9-year-old kids, the staff repeatedly emphasized that I must bring their passports to prove they were elementary school students.
On the day of the visit, the guide strictly required adults to hold their children’s hands at all times and prohibited the use of mobile translators. Although they provided multilingual guidebooks, when I tried to hand one to my kids, I briefly let go of their hands and was immediately scolded harshly by the guide. It honestly felt like being back in military boot camp.
After that, I stayed at the back of the group holding my children’s hands the entire time, just to avoid being shouted at again. As a result, we couldn’t see anything during the tour and had to rely on the pictures in the booklet. Only after the tour ended could I explain to my kids what we had supposedly just seen. Overall, it was a complete waste of time and money.
