Myozenji Temple

The Myozenji Museum occupies one of Japan's most impressive traditional structures in the UNESCO World Heritage village of Shirakawa-go, Gifu Prefecture. The temple itself was founded in 1748 as the main Buddhist sanctuary of Ogimachi village, following the Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land) school tradition. The museum building, constructed around 1817 by Takayama's renowned carpenter Yosuke Yamamura, stands 15 meters tall across five stories, making it the tallest gassho-zukuri building in the region.

The museum is housed within the kuri, the former living quarters of the head priest and his family, representing one of the largest gassho-style houses in the village. This architectural masterpiece demonstrates the ingenuity of traditional Japanese building techniques, with its steep thatched roof designed to withstand heavy snowfall in the Japanese Alps. The structure showcases ancient everyday tools and artifacts that illustrate the traditional way of life in this mountain region.

Visitors can explore multiple floors of carefully preserved living spaces, including traditional tatami rooms and a central hearth area that served as the heart of daily life. The lower living areas feature authentic tatami flooring and a large hearth that functioned as kitchen, heating system, and disinfection center. The fireplace remains continuously lit, allowing guests to experience the authentic atmosphere and distinctive aromas of traditional mountain life. The museum provides insight into how families adapted to the harsh mountain climate while maintaining their cultural traditions over centuries.

The museum is located within Ogimachi village in Shirakawa-go, accessible by bus from major cities including Kanazawa and Takayama. From Kanazawa, the journey takes approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes via the Hokuriku Expressway. Admission is ¥300 for adults and group rates are available for 25 or more visitors at ¥240 per adult. Payment is accepted in cash only, and the museum provides an authentic glimpse into Japan's mountain heritage within one of the country's most photographed traditional villages.
