Otabe Honkan

Otabe Honkan stands as the flagship store and production facility of one of Kyoto's most beloved confectionery brands. The company created its signature product, Tsubuan-iri Yatsuhashi Otabe, in 1966, introducing a soft, unbaked version of the traditional yatsuhashi rice cracker filled with sweet red bean paste. This innovation transformed a 300-year-old Kyoto tradition into a modern souvenir staple that has become known throughout Japan.

The confectionery uses carefully selected ingredients including Koshihikari rice flour specially cultivated in Kyoto and Fukui Prefectures, while the red bean paste is made from specially grown adzuki beans from Tokachi, Hokkaido. These beans are cooked in the company's own factory in Wakasa. The product comes in classic flavors like cinnamon (nikkin) and matcha, along with seasonal varieties and modern innovations including chocolate and Western-style versions. Each piece is individually wrapped, making it convenient for gift-giving.

The main store offers visitors a comprehensive experience beyond simple shopping. Factory tours and otabe-making classes are available with advance reservations. On the second floor, visitors can observe the production process through viewing windows and participate in the Otabe making experience. The automated production line showcases how the triangular rice cakes are shaped, individually packaged, and boxed with precision. The facility also includes a café on the premises that opens at 11:00 AM. The store sells not only Otabe products but also Kyo Baum and other regional confections available exclusively at this location.

Otabe Honkan is located at 35-2, Nishi-Kujo Takabatake-cho, Minami-ku, Kyoto City, approximately 10 minutes walk from Jujo Station on the Kintetsu Kyoto Line. The store is open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily, operating 365 days a year. The facility provides approximately 40 parking spaces, including 5 bus spaces. Entry to the shop and factory viewing area is free of charge, though hands-on workshops require booking and payment.
