Ryugu Shrine, Kochi

Ryugu Shrine stands dramatically on a rocky cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean near the westernmost tip of Kochi Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to a sea goddess, serving as a spiritual guardian for local fishing communities. Legend has it that local women would come to Ryugu Shrine after their menfolk had headed to sea to fish. Here, they would dance with their kimono open showing themselves to the sea, in the hope that the god would bless them with a big catch.

The shrine holds deep cultural significance as a place where the ocean's power is both revered and sought for protection. Its striking red torii gate stands boldly against the endless expanse of the Pacific, creating one of Japan's most dramatic coastal shrine settings. The location represents the spiritual connection between local communities and the sea that sustains them, maintaining traditions that have persisted for generations.

Visitors reach Ryugu Shrine through a rewarding but challenging journey. From the parking area, it requires a 15 to 20-minute hike down through a beautiful tunnel of trees that suddenly opens up to a breathtakingly dramatic view. The promenade leading to Ryugu Shrine is made up of stairs and can only be accessed by foot, but the spectacular ocean panorama from the cliff-top shrine makes the effort worthwhile. As you pass through the forest, you'll encounter rock walls and stone steps that create an extraordinary atmosphere. The shrine's vermilion torii facing the sea adds a charming touch.

Ryugu Shrine is located about 15 minutes from Tosashimizu City by car. Look for a stone shrine gate by the side of the road next to a layby with some public toilets and vending machines about 15 minutes drive from Cape Ashizuri. The site is accessible by private vehicle only, as no direct public transportation reaches the shrine entrance. Visitors should allow adequate time for the hiking portion and prepare for the return climb. There is no admission fee to visit the shrine.
