Tamaudun is the royal mausoleum of the Shō dynasty of the Ryukyu Kingdom, located in the Shuri district of Naha, Okinawa. Constructed in 1521 by King Shō Shin, Tamaudun served as the burial site for members of the royal family and their relatives. It represents Ryukyuan funerary architecture and ancient stone construction techniques, holding significant historical and cultural value.
The mausoleum is divided into three main sections: the front chamber for ceremonial purposes, the central section for male royals, and the rear chamber for female royals. The precise stonework and blend of Chinese and Ryukyuan architectural styles make it an architectural masterpiece. In 1992, Tamaudun, along with Shurijo Castle and other Ryukyu heritage sites, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it an important historical attraction in Okinawa.
