Yoro Valley

Yoro Valley is a scenic gorge carved by the Yoro River through the center of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture. Located just 2 hours from Tokyo, this natural valley stretches six kilometers from Yoro-Keikoku Station on the Kominato Railway Line south to Otaki. The area features a tunnel built nearly 150 years ago at Kobundo-ato, reflecting the region's historical engineering achievements. Long considered a tourist location for its hot springs, the valley combines natural beauty with the therapeutic benefits of mineral-rich thermal waters.

The climate is generally mild, making it a great hiking destination in winter, and also earning the title "the latest autumn leaves in Kanto", as they come into full color from late November to early December. The valley showcases distinct seasonal landscapes, from spring azaleas and wisteria to summer riverside walks and winter icicles. The area is home to the "8 Scenic Points of Yoro", which includes the biggest waterfall in all of Chiba Prefecture, the Awamata Waterfall. Additional scenic highlights include Umegase-keikoku Gorge and Tsutsumori Momiji Valley.

Visitors can choose from three established hiking courses, with the 4-kilometer waterfall circuit course being particularly suitable for beginners and families as it has gentle slopes and passes five different waterfalls. Walking paths line the Yoro River throughout the valley, allowing easy access to the natural surroundings. The area around Mount Daifukuyama offers additional hiking opportunities with panoramic views over the valley. Hot spring facilities are scattered throughout the valley, with many traditional inns channeling the thermal waters directly into their baths. A footbath is available at Yorokeikoku Station for day visitors.

From Tokyo Station, take the Uchibo train line to Goi Station, which takes 50 to 60 minutes, then transfer to the Kominato train line to reach Yoro-Keikoku Station at the valley entrance. The complete journey takes approximately 2 hours 32 minutes and costs ¥2,222. Alternatively, visitors arriving at Kazusanakano Station on the Isumi Railway can take a bus to Awamata no Taki. The valley is free to enter and open for walking at any time. Coin lockers and restrooms are available at Yorokeikoku Station.
