I have created this three week Japan itinerary as I want to share our favourite things to do in Japan as a family. I like to focus on special slow travel moments with that perfect mix of old and new Japan. Within this itinerary, I make sure to weave in playground "wriggle time" and little niche experiences that you may not have known about before travelling to Japan. I also believe that meal times are an important part of the Japan plan -food experiences* in Japan can open little and big eyes to so much about Japan as a country but also cultural differences and even some small Japanese language opportunities. *I have also included as many "picky eater" alternatives as possible while drafting out this itinerary for families. My tip if you have super dooper fussy eaters ? Feed kids what they want to eat for an early dinner first and then take them with you to the restaurant that the adults want to try and order the kids rice, fries or dessert and give them some colouring or sticker books from the 100 yen shop so the grown ups have a chance to indulge. EVERY restaurant I mention in this itinerary welcomes children. Feel free to chop and change this itinerary to suit your travel needs and budget or even just take on one day of one city in particular. Ok. Well! I'm so excited for you to let me boss you around and make your Japan family holiday easier and even more magical ! *in order to make moving around as easy as possible - I recommend using the luggage forwarding system in Japan for every second hotel and moving with just carry on luggage while on the bullet train etc* (I have links how to do this through the itinerary.)

So central (just a minute or two from Shibuya Crossing). Incredible facilities and an amazing buffet breakfast.
Perfect for families who would like an apartment style hotel with a kitchenette and a swimming pool. Higher price point but also SO worth it.
My favourite hotel to recommend to families staying in Tokyo. Great area with the park and swan boats nearby. Spacious rooms with kitchenettes and bunk beds. A public bath on the top floor ( no swimsuits allowed, of course.)
Higher end business hotel. Extremely family friendly area. Public bath on the top floor (no swimsuits allowed, of course.)
Close to the station and so easy to get everywhere. It's on the Yamanote line. Spacious rooms with bunks and kitchenettes.
Quieter quaint area but still on the Yamanote line so it's so easy to get everywhere. Big hotel rooms for Japan and some suites for families with kitchens too.

You made it! Now to settle in and start exploring !
I always believe that the first day can really set the scene for the rest of the Japan holiday. So, let's make sure everyone in the family gets the vibe - "Whoa - ok. We are really in Japan now!" Today is "big city" day. Time to go a convenience store and everyone chooses at least one snack. See our Japanese convenience store favourite items at thetokyochapter.com if you'd like to see pictures of what we like and also for help on buying different types of milk etc. When it is time to head out - I recommend starting with Shibuya .

Go here for an affordable sushi train restaurant. Kids can order on the ipad. Very casual and is easy with kids. High end sushi / omakase with children. Sushi Hicho is just so so beautiful. They do allow children but the restaurant is small (only seats 24) so, for me, I would only feel comfortable bringing a sleeping baby in a stroller or carrier or a child old enough to sit quietly and eat and enjoy the sushi and sashimi. Please budget 8000 yen per person at lunch time and more like 15,000 yen for dinner. They accept most major credit cards. See the full menu at Sushi Hicho here. This is a non-smoking restaurant. As with all high end sushi restaurants, customers are asked to not wear any perfume or cologne. Travel day! Moving to Kyoto!
Take a bullet train from either Shinagawa or Tokyo Station. I prefer Shinagawa with children as it is less busy and overwhelming - especially for Shinkansen (bullet train) travel with kids.
日本东京都港区
As early as you can manage: take a bullet train to Kyoto from Shinagawa or Tokyo Station. I prefer Shinagawa with children as it is less busy and overwhelming - especially for Shinkansen (bullet train) travel with kids. I recommend arriving 40 minutes ahead of train departure time (even more time if you will need to grab breakfast at the station beforehand. - City Bakery inside Shinagawa Station is great, by the way.) This gives everyone time to go to the restroom, find their numbers on the platform that correlate with their designated carriage, grab an ekiben or snacks in the station or one the platform and also watch some other bullet trains fly by first - this makes it even more exciting. Dinner (or lunch) suggestion: this is a great casual restaurant to have a casual lunch with an omakase sushi course. Omakase courses at lunchtime are 2,800 yen, 5,800 yen or 9,800 yen. This restaurant allows babies as well as children. They have space to store a stroller while you dine. If you are not having an omakase course and ordering a set course or off the menu.. I recommend budgeting around 3000 yen for lunch and 10.000 yen per adult for dinner. Sushi Nakago Bettei is 3 mins walk from Shinsaibashi Station or 7 mins walk from Namba Station. This restaurant accepts most major credit cards. There is a table charge of 330 yen per person (and to say thank you you will be gifted a small appetizer of the season called an “otoshi”) Sushi Nakago Bettei is completely non-smoking. Another lunch suggestion: choose your own pizza toppings. Popular on weekends.
JR Shinjuku Station, 3-chōme-38-1 Shinjuku, Shinjuku City, Tokyo 151-0051日本
Another lunch option: this is a beautiful food hall with options like oysters, sushi, steaks and a bakery. The whole hall is nice and shiny and new and is all non-smoking. Great for families
5-chōme-24-2 Sendagaya, Shibuya, Tokyo 151-0051日本
Another lunch suggestion: go to the basement floor of Takashimaya Times Square (known as the depachika) for a whole range of Japanese deli treats and premade bentos and other cooked options.) You could also take these back to your hotel room for dinner. I have pictures of this basement food floor of Takashimaya Times Square. thetokyochapter.com/theshinjukuareawithkids

Times Square Building, 2~7F, 5-chōme-24-2 Sendagaya, Shibuya, Tokyo 151-0051日本
Visit the Hands Shinjuku store (this is a part of the Takashimaya Times Square complex mentioned above) and check out all of the beautiful cards and stationery.. Take the escalators up afterward to the 9th floor and check out the toy floor in the connecting buidling Takashimaya Times Square. There is a Disney Store and a Hello Kitty Store on this floor too.

AFTERNOON OPTION #1: Visit the Tokyo Toy Museum, Fire Museum (free) and Shinjuku Gyoen. I have written in detail about the Tokyo Toy Museum here. thetokyochapter.com/tokyo-toy-museum-shinjuku
日本〒160-0004 Tokyo, Shinjuku City, Yotsuya, 3-chōme−10−10

This park is especially beautiful in cherry blossom season and peak autumn but still worth a visit. Just a note : this garden has an entrance fee and you will need cash. It's a botanical/national garden so there is no play equipment or ball games allowed here. You can, however, take a picnic. Read about Shinjuku Gyoen here: thetokyochapter.com/shinjuku-gyoen-national-garden-with-kids

Early dinner suggestion: Pizza, pasta, salads. They also have gluten free pastas and vegetarian menu options.
日本〒160-0022 Tokyo, Shinjuku City, Shinjuku, 3-chōme−11−11 ダイアン新宿 4F
Another early dinner suggestion: This is a high end yakiniku restaurant with Kobe beef and Wagyu. Make a reservation as they will reserve a private family tatami room for you to use with kids (perfect for babies and toddlers that aren't great at sitting still too.) They have space to store strollers. If you will be having the kobe beef and wagyu- budget 17,000 yen per adult to dine here at dinner time.

AFTERNOON OPTION #2: This is also known as the Lucky Cat temple. Collect a station stamp "Eki Stampu) at Gotokuji Station and, while at the temple, purchase a little clay cat to take home.
日本〒160-0022 Tokyo, Shinjuku City, Shinjuku, 3-chōme−26−13 新宿中村屋ビル 6F
Dinner suggestion: Japanese fusion izakaya. Kids are welcome here. Make a reservation. You will need to remove shoes at the entrance and put them in a little locker. I recommend ordering the guacamole and the corn - so good. Budget approx 4000 yen per person here for dinner.
日本〒151-8583 Tokyo, Shibuya, Yoyogi, 2-chōme−2−1 小田急ホテルセンチュリーサザンタワ 19F
Another dinner suggestion: Omakase Sushi in Shinjuku (with an all you can eat option) Yurakucho Kakida in Shinjuku is an omakase sushi restaurant who allow children and are quite reasonably priced for such high end sushi. If you are ok to forgo sitting at a counter and are ok with a table then why not reserve the bottomless sushi option (they just keep bringing sushi until you can’t eat anymore!) Either way, you can book a course for depending on your budget but, in general, it’s realistic to expect to pay 15,000 yen for lunch and dinner per adult. They accept most major credit cards. This restaurant is 3 mins walk from the South Exit of Shinjuku Station.
日本〒160-0022 Tokyo, Shinjuku City, Shinjuku, 3-chōme−27−10 武蔵野会館 6F
An izakaya that welcomes kids. Shoes off restaurant. All themed like you're in the backstreets of Kyoto. This place is really cool. Like all izakaya - you are expected to order a whole lot of little plates to share -and not all at once. Just order a few things - try them and order more of the same or something different. For picky eaters there are options like potato wedges or steak too. Great place for the grown ups to try hot and cold sake.

A morning in Tokyo before moving to the Disney area
Forward your luggage the night before so you can move to the disney area with just hand luggage/ carry on luggage. https://www.instagram.com/p/DVOHoppks4T/?hl=en My recommended hotels in the Tokyo Disney area for families: -Ibis Styles Tokyo Bay, Hyatt Regency Tokyo Bay, Henn Na Hotel Maihama, Hotel Okura Tokyo Bay, The Disney Ambassador Hotel, The Tokyo Disneyland Hotel, Oriental Hotel Tokyo Bay.
2-1 Uenokōen, Taito City, Tokyo 110-0007日本
After checking out of the hotel and saying goodbye to your luggage ( How to forward our luggage information here: instagram.com/p/DVOHoppks4T/?hl=en) go for a family swan paddleboat ride. Afterwards, get some kakigori (flavoured shaved ice) or other food stall options outside the Shinobazunoike Benten-do Temple. You'll need cash for this.
1-chōme-28-9 Nezu, Bunkyo City, Tokyo 113-0031日本
If you still have time to spare, visit Nezu Shrine. (7 mins in a cab or 20 mins on foot from the swan boat area.) The foliage and flowers here are spectacular in the right season. There are also lots of little Tori gates here which makes for beautiful pictures with kids - lots of little paths for kids to follow too. They also have food stalls and some festival games for kids (especially in the warmer months.) I have lots of pictures of Nezu Shrine here: thetokyochapter.com/nezu-shrine
2-chōme-6-7 Ueno, Taito City, Tokyo 110-0005日本
Early lunch suggestion: Tensuzu is in a back street just 5 mins walk from the Okachimachi Station (so, in the Ueno area.) They welcome children (the restaurant is small though so I’d really only go here with kids who are able to stay seated while they dine.) There is a service charge of 330 yen per person here (you will receive an otoshi as a thank you when you sit down. You don’t have to eat it if you don’t want to but please just accept it and leave it on your table.) They accept most major credit cards. I recommend budgeting for 3000 yen per adult at lunch or more like 11,000 yen at dinner time. If you eat everything, I recommend getting the omakase tempura course for a little under 9000 yen. Soooo good. I love how they open from 4:30 for dinner – makes it much easier to visit with kids. If everyone is tired, you can also get takeout from here and take it back to your hotel. Best to make a reservation here.
26-5 Maihama, Urayasu, Chiba 279-0031日本
Take a train to Maihama Station. This will take approx 30 mins. Here are some suggestions for lunch once you arrive at Maihama (for that time between arriving and checking into your Disney area hotel.)
日本〒279-0031 Chiba, Urayasu, Maihama, 1−4 イクスピアリ 2F シアター・フロント
Lunch suggestion: no need to make a reservation if coming here at lunch time. My kids LOVE this place - mostly for the animatronics. I have a write up on this restaurant here: thetokyochapter.com/the-rainforest-cafe-in-the-tokyo-disney-area
日本〒279-8529 Chiba, Urayasu, Maihama, 1−4 イクスピアリ 1F ザ・コートヤード
Another lunch suggestion: this is a take out only bakery - a fabulous option for if you want to quickly eat something and keep moving. This bakery is famous for their signature white shokupan - also we also love the curry pan, handmade egg sandwiches and the mini pizzas. I have pictures of the options here if you'd like to see. thetokyochapter.com/urayasu-maihama-and-the-general-disney-area
日本〒279-8529 Chiba, Urayasu, Maihama, 1−4−イクスピアリ 3F
Another lunch suggestion: they have space to store strollers while you dine and they also have an English menu. They cook the okonomiyaki for you here so no need to cook it yourself. See my tips here on ordering a vegetarian version of okonomiyaki. thetokyochapter.com/how-to-order-a-vegetarian-okonomiyaki-in-japanese
日本〒279-0031 Chiba, Urayasu, Maihama, 1−4−イクスピアリ グレイシャス・スクエア 3F
Another lunch suggestion: this restaurant seats 270 people so you'd have to be really unlucky to have to wait for a table here - especially at lunchtime. There is a 10% service charge added to the final bill at the end. They have a kids menu and many gluten free diners say that they haven't had reactions when just ordering a steak.
日本〒279-0031 Chiba, Urayasu, Maihama, 1−4−109 イクスピアリ 1F
In the same complex as these restaurants is a supermarket called Seijo Ishii (the logo is maroon red and white.) They have lots of ready made bentos and lots of international snacks. These might be handy to have in your bag for disney (bentos aren't allowed inside the Disney Parks but small snacks are ok.) I have taken lots of pictures of the options sold at this exact Seijo Ishii supermarket here. thetokyochapter.com/urayasu-maihama-and-the-general-disney-area

In the same complex, visit Moreru Mignon Print Club to take the photo booth stickers as a family. The shop itself is a sight to see - the most instagrammable shop ever!
日本〒279-8529 Chiba, Urayasu, Maihama, 1−4−イクスピアリ2F 274区
The Disney Store in this complex is so big and there are screens that make it look like the characters are talking elevators etc. Even if you don't buy anything, it's great to walk through. Note: if you want to buy the same merchandise sold inside the Tokyo Disney Parks - you will need to walk for a few minutes to a store called "Bon Voyage."

Visit here if kids are in desperate need of a nearby adventure playground. Then, it's definitely time to check into your hotel and rest up for tomorrow!
