Hatoma Island

Hatoma Island is a small, crescent-shaped coral island located in the Yaeyama archipelago of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Situated approximately 9 kilometers north of Iriomote Island, this remote island covers an area of just 0.96 square kilometers and has a population of fewer than 50 residents. The island belongs to the town of Taketomi and represents one of the smallest inhabited islands in the region, maintaining a traditional Okinawan way of life largely untouched by modern development.

The island's significance lies in its pristine natural environment and traditional culture. Hatoma is surrounded by exceptionally clear waters and vibrant coral reefs, making it part of the Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park. The island's beaches feature powdery white sand and turquoise waters typical of the Yaeyama islands. The small community on Hatoma has preserved traditional Okinawan architectural styles and customs, with the island known for its agricultural production, particularly pineapples and sugarcane, despite its modest size.

Visitors to Hatoma Island experience an authentic glimpse of remote island life in Okinawa. The primary activities include exploring the pristine beaches, snorkeling or diving in the surrounding coral reefs teeming with tropical marine life, and walking through the compact village to observe traditional stone walls and red-tiled houses. The island can be circumnavigated on foot in approximately one hour, making it ideal for a half-day or day trip. Swimming and beach relaxation are popular, with the calm waters particularly inviting during the warmer months.

Access to Hatoma Island requires taking a ferry from Ishigaki Island or Iriomote Island. Regular boat services operate from Uehara Port on Iriomote Island, with the journey taking approximately 10 minutes. Services may be limited and weather-dependent, so advance confirmation is recommended. There are no accommodation facilities or restaurants on the island, so visitors should bring their own food and water. There is no admission fee to visit the island itself, though ferry costs apply. The island lacks tourist infrastructure, including shops and public facilities, emphasizing the need for self-sufficiency during visits.
