Lake Kameyama

4.1 (121)Natural FeatureEstablishment

Lake Kameyama is an artificial reservoir located in Kimitsu City, Chiba Prefecture, created by the construction of the Kameyama Dam on the upstream section of the Obitsu River. The dam was built between 1969 and 1980 as a concrete gravity dam designed primarily for flood control and water supply. The dam's catchment area spans 69.7 square kilometers and can store 14.75 million cubic meters of water, impounding approximately 139 hectares of land when full.

Lake Kameyama holds the distinction of being the largest and only dam lake in Chiba Prefecture. The lake has formed a complex and winding shape through a beautiful ravine, creating a scenic waterway that has become a significant recreational destination in the region. The lake showcases scenic beauty across all four seasons, making it particularly attractive to visitors seeking natural landscapes within easy reach of Tokyo.

The lake serves as a popular destination for outdoor activities and seasonal tourism. Fishing enthusiasts frequent the area, as it has gained recognition as a prime bass fishing spot around Tokyo, with numerous rental boat shops and fishing gear stores available. Visitors can enjoy hiking trails, boat rides, and seasonal festivals, with the Kameyama Autumn Festival being particularly notable for its scarlet maple leaf viewing opportunities from tour boats. The area also features abundant hot spring inns and camping facilities for those seeking extended stays.

Lake Kameyama is accessible via a 15-minute walk from Kazusa-Kameyama Station. The lake can be clearly observed from the road above the Kameyama Dam, and walking trails provide various vantage points for visitors. The dam is located at 33 Toyoda, Kimitsu 292-0523, Chiba Prefecture. Access to the lake and surrounding recreational areas is generally free, though specific activities such as boat rentals and guided tours may require separate fees. The location's proximity to the Tokyo metropolitan area makes it an accessible day-trip destination for urban visitors seeking natural scenery and outdoor recreation.

What other travelers are saying about Lake Kameyama

Take the JR Uchibo Line to Kazusa-Kameyama Station, which is approximately a 90-minute train ride from Tokyo. From the station, it's a 15-minute walk to reach the lake and dam area. The lake is also accessible by car via Route 410, making it a convenient day trip destination from the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Lake Kameyama is renowned as one of the premier bass fishing spots near Tokyo, with numerous boat rental shops and fishing equipment stores available. Visitors can also enjoy hiking trails around the lake, seasonal boat tours (especially popular during autumn for maple leaf viewing), camping at nearby facilities, and relaxing at local hot spring inns. The area offers year-round outdoor recreation opportunities.

The lake offers scenic beauty throughout all four seasons, but autumn is particularly popular due to the spectacular scarlet maple foliage that can be viewed from tour boats during the Kameyama Autumn Festival. Spring and summer are ideal for fishing and water activities, while the quieter winter months provide peaceful hiking and hot spring experiences.

Access to Lake Kameyama and the dam viewing area is free of charge. However, specific activities such as boat rentals, guided tours, fishing equipment rentals, and accommodation at hot spring inns require separate fees. The lake can be easily viewed from the road above the Kameyama Dam without any cost.

Lake Kameyama holds the distinction of being the largest and only dam lake in Chiba Prefecture. Created by the Kameyama Dam between 1969 and 1980, it serves the dual purpose of flood control and water supply while forming a scenic recreational destination. The lake's winding shape through a beautiful ravine and its proximity to Tokyo make it a unique combination of engineering achievement and natural beauty in the region.
