Okayama Korakuen

4.4 (16139)GardenTourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Okayama Korakuen is one of Japan's Three Great Gardens (Nihon Sanmei'en), alongside Kenroku-en in Kanazawa and Kairaku-en in Mito. It was constructed on the orders of Ikeda Tsunamasa, the feudal lord of Okayama Domain, and completed in 1700 after 14 years of construction. Originally used as a retreat for the lord and for receiving guests, the garden was opened to the public in 1884 and has since become the cultural centerpiece of Okayama City.

The garden spans approximately 13.3 hectares along the banks of the Asahi River, with Okayama Castle — known as "Crow Castle" for its striking black exterior — visible across the water, forming a deliberate scenic backdrop. This visual relationship between the garden and the castle is a defining feature of its design. The layout follows the kaiyu-shiki (strolling garden) style, meaning it was conceived to be experienced by walking through it, with shifting views composed at every turn. Its grounds include expansive lawns (a rare feature in traditional Japanese gardens), a working tea plantation, rice paddies, plum and cherry orchards, and a series of ponds, streams, and elevated mounds.

Visitors can explore the garden on foot along well-maintained paths that lead past teahouses — including En'yōtei and Ryūten, both original structures — as well as cranes kept on the grounds as a nod to the Ikeda clan's tradition of crane-rearing. The seasonal experience changes markedly throughout the year: cherry blossoms draw large crowds in spring, fireflies appear over the ponds in early summer, and autumn foliage transforms the garden in October and November. Special illumination events are held periodically after dark.

Okayama Korakuen is located a 15-minute walk from Okayama Station, or accessible via the Higashiyama tram line to the Shiroshita stop, followed by a short walk across the Tsurumi Bridge. Admission is ¥410 for adults, with discounts for children and senior citizens. The garden sits adjacent to Okayama Castle, and a combined ticket for both sites is available at a reduced rate.

What other travelers are saying about Okayama Korakuen

All four seasons offer something distinct. Spring (late March to early April) brings cherry and plum blossoms, early summer is known for firefly evenings over the ponds, mid-October to mid-November sees autumn foliage, and winter is the quietest period with occasional snow.

Most visitors complete the main circuit in 60 to 90 minutes. Allow up to two hours if stopping at a teahouse or attending a tea ceremony.

Yes. The two sites are a short walk apart, connected by the Tsurumi Bridge across the Asahi River. A combined admission ticket is available at a discounted rate, and most visitors cover both in a single half-day visit.

The main pathways are largely flat and paved. Some elevated mounds and inner paths involve steps or uneven ground. Wheelchairs are available on loan at the entrance free of charge.

There is no storage inside the garden. Coin lockers are available at Okayama Station, roughly 15 minutes away by tram.

Okayama Korakuen was originally the private garden of the Ikeda family, the feudal lords of Okayama. It is one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens, covering about 130,000 to 140,000 square meters, and still preserves the landscape and layout from the Edo period centuries ago. The garden features a circular walking design, with lawns, ponds, tea houses, and arched bridges all connected. Visitors can also enjoy views of Okayama Castle from within the grounds. April is cherry blossom season here. The garden and its surroundings are planted with many Somei Yoshino cherry trees, mainly in the Sakura Grove, Baba area, and South Gate lawn, where a 180-meter-long cherry blossom tunnel forms. In spring, the blooming sakura tinge the whole garden pink, and the weeping cherry trees (Shidarezakura) are especially popular around Hananoha Pond and Eisho Bridge. Petals often fall and gather on the water, creating scenes of “flower rafts” and carpets of cherry blossoms. In mid-to-late April, azaleas and other spring flowers also come into bloom. Yuishinzan is the only artificial hill in the garden, about 6 meters high, added later by the second lord Ikeda Tsugumasa. As the highest point in the garden, its summit offers sweeping views over Korakuen—including the wide lawns, ponds, Enyo-tei Pavilion, and cherry groves, with Okayama Castle in the distance. In spring, the top of Yuishinzan becomes especially popular for scenery and photography, blending blossoms with the garden’s landscape. To fully experience Korakuen’s allure, it’s recommended to explore its history, aesthetics, and the spectacular cherry blossoms of spring from various angles during your visit.
