Tokoname Maneki-Neko

Tokoname, a coastal city in Aichi Prefecture, has established itself as Japan's leading producer of maneki-neko (lucky cat) ceramic figurines since the 1950s. The city's association with these symbols of good fortune stems from its centuries-old pottery tradition, making it a unique destination where ceramic craftsmanship meets cultural folklore.

Pottery production in Tokoname dates back to the 12th century, establishing the city as one of Japan's six ancient kilns. When traditional pottery industries faced decline in the late 1930s, local artisans began producing maneki-neko figurines as a new business venture. By 1950, Tokoname became Japan's main producer of lucky cats, developing a distinctive style characterized by large eyes and ears on plump bodies. The maneki-neko traditionally represents good fortune—cats raising their left paw are said to beckon customers, while those raising their right paw bring wealth.

The primary attraction is Tokoname Maneki Neko-dori (Lucky Cat Street), which features 39 colorful ceramic cat sculptures created by local artists, each offering specific blessings such as marriage, health, or success. The street's centerpiece is Tokonyan, a giant maneki-neko figure standing 3.8 meters high and 6.3 meters wide that peers over an embankment.

Created in 2008, this oversized cat head with a raised left paw has become the city's beloved symbol. Visitors can spot 11 small, realistic cat figurines near Tokonyan that keep the giant sculpture company. The street connects Tokoname Station with the Tokoname Ceramics Hall, serving as the gateway to the broader Pottery Footpath walking courses that showcase the city's ceramic heritage.

Tokoname is accessible in approximately 30 minutes by train from Nagoya Station. Travelers take the Meitetsu line from Meitetsu Nagoya Station to Tokoname Station. The station is only two stops from Chubu Centrair International Airport Station, making it convenient for arriving passengers. Tokonyan and the maneki-neko street are located a 5-minute walk from Tokoname Station. The outdoor street displays and Tokonyan sculpture are free to view. Visitors should note that the Pottery Footpath includes both flat sections and steep slopes, though parts of the route are wheelchair and stroller accessible.
