Ekimae Koutou Onsen

Ekimae Koutou Onsen is a historic public bathhouse located in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, renowned as Japan's leading hot spring resort destination. Built in 1924 during the Taisho era, this establishment was constructed through local fundraising efforts and has served the community continuously for over a century. Originally named Yakushi Onsen after the medicine Buddha Yakushi Nyorai, it was later renamed Kitamachi Onsen before becoming Ekimae Koutou Onsen. The name translates to "station-front high-grade onsen," reflecting the pride locals take in this facility.

The building itself stands as an architectural landmark with its distinctive European-style design featuring white walls and a green steepled roof, creating a striking contrast to the traditional Japanese bathing culture housed within. This German architectural style was the pride of the neighborhood when wooden buildings dominated the streetscape. Located in Beppu City, which boasts the largest amount of onsen water in Japan, the facility draws visitors seeking authentic thermal experiences.

Visitors can choose between two distinct bathing options, each requiring a separate admission fee. The Atsuyu (hot bath) reaches an intense 48 degrees Celsius, while the Nuruyu (lukewarm bath) maintains 44.5 degrees Celsius. Clear sulfurous spring water flows directly from the source in the hot bath, while naturally carbonated water fills the cypress-wood lukewarm bath. The facility welcomes tattooed guests without restrictions, making it accessible to international visitors. Basic amenities like shampoo, soap, and towels are available for purchase on-site.

The bathhouse is situated just a 2-minute walk from the east exit of Beppu Station. From Tokyo, travelers take the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen to Kokura Station, then transfer to the Sonic-Nichirin express train for the journey to Beppu. From Fukuoka, direct express trains reach Beppu Station in under two hours. The bathing fee is ¥250 for adults and approximately ¥150 for children. The facility also offers overnight lodging on the second floor, with dorm rooms at ¥1,600 and single rooms at ¥2,600, though reservations are required. A small parking lot accommodating eight vehicles is available at the entrance.
