Inuyama Castle

Inuyama Castle stands as one of Japan's twelve surviving original castles and holds the distinction of being the oldest existing castle keep in Japan, with its main tower dating back to 1537. Perched on a hill overlooking the Kiso River in Aichi Prefecture, the castle was constructed by Oda Nobuyasu, uncle of the famous warlord Oda Nobunaga, during the turbulent Sengoku period. Until 2004, it remained the only privately owned castle in Japan, having been in the possession of the Naruse family for generations before being transferred to a foundation for preservation.

The castle has been designated a National Treasure of Japan, one of only five castles to receive this prestigious status. Its strategic location made it a crucial military stronghold throughout feudal Japanese history, changing hands multiple times during conflicts between powerful daimyo clans. The three-story wooden structure showcases authentic Momoyama-period architecture, with its distinctive black-tiled roof and white walls rising elegantly above the river valley. The building's survival through centuries of warfare, earthquakes, and modernization makes it an invaluable example of medieval Japanese military architecture.

Visitors can climb the steep wooden stairs inside the keep to reach the top floor observation deck, which offers panoramic views of the Kiso River, the surrounding mountains, and on clear days, the peaks of the Japanese Alps. The interior preserves original architectural features including exposed beams, traditional tatami rooms, and defensive elements such as stone-drop windows. The grounds include restored gates, stone walls, and a small museum displaying artifacts related to the castle's history. The castle is particularly striking during cherry blossom season when approximately 400 cherry trees bloom along the riverbanks below.

Inuyama Castle is located in Inuyama city, approximately 25 kilometers north of Nagoya. From Nagoya Station, take the Meitetsu Inuyama Line to Inuyama-yuen Station, a journey of about 25 minutes, followed by a 15-minute walk to the castle. Alternatively, Inuyama Station on the same line requires a 20-minute walk. Admission costs ¥550 for adults, with discounts available for children and students. The castle can be visited year-round, though the narrow staircases and steep climb may present challenges for visitors with mobility limitations.
