Kamo Aquarium

Tsuruoka City Kamo Aquarium, located in Yamagata Prefecture, holds the distinction of being the world's largest jellyfish aquarium with over 60 species of jellyfish on display. Originally established in 1956 as a small local aquarium, the facility underwent a complete transformation and reopened in 2014 as a cutting-edge marine attraction that has fundamentally changed how visitors experience aquatic life.

The aquarium's centerpiece is the Jellyfish Dream Theater, featuring a massive 5,000-liter cylindrical tank housing approximately 2,000 moon jellies. This mesmerizing display, combined with synchronized lighting and music, creates an immersive environment that has earned the facility international recognition. The aquarium also maintains significant research programs, contributing to marine biology studies and jellyfish breeding techniques that support conservation efforts worldwide.

Located approximately 7 kilometers from JR Tsuruoka Station, the aquarium is accessible by local bus taking about 30 minutes, with buses departing every 2 hours. Rental cars provide more flexibility for exploring the surrounding Shonai region. Adult admission costs ¥1,000, with discounted rates for students and children.
