Kawarage Oyutaki is located near Kawarage Jigoku, one of Japan's three major sacred mountains. Kawarage Jigoku was founded by Priest Gesso in 807 and features a volcanic landscape with gray-white lava rocks, steam vents, and a strong sulfur smell that gives it the name "Jigoku" (hell). The thermal water that feeds the waterfall originates from this volcanic activity, flowing approximately 1 kilometer downstream before cascading over the falls. Doroyu Onsen village, with 1,200 years of history, is located about 2 kilometers from Kawarage Jigoku.
