Kintai Bridge

The Kintai Bridge stands as one of Japan's most iconic wooden arch bridges, spanning the Nishiki River in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Originally constructed in 1673 by Kikkawa Hiroyoshi, the feudal lord of Iwakuni Domain, the bridge was engineered to withstand the river's frequent flooding. The current structure, faithfully rebuilt using traditional techniques after a typhoon destroyed it in 1950, consists of five wooden arches supported by stone pillars and stretches 193.3 meters in length. The bridge has been designated a National Scenic Beauty and represents a masterpiece of traditional Japanese carpentry, built entirely without nails using an interlocking wooden framework.

Kintai Bridge connects the castle town with Kikko Park and provides access to Iwakuni Castle atop Mount Shiroyama. The bridge exemplifies Edo-period engineering innovation, with its distinctive arched design created to resist strong currents while maintaining structural elegance. The surrounding area transforms with seasonal beauty, particularly during cherry blossom season in early April when over 3,000 sakura trees bloom along the riverbanks, and during autumn when the mountains display vibrant foliage. The bridge and its setting have inspired countless artists and poets throughout Japanese history.

Visitors can walk across the bridge's unique arched structure, experiencing the craftsmanship firsthand as the wooden planks curve upward and downward across each arch. The adjacent Kikko Park contains several samurai residences and museums, while a ropeway connects to Iwakuni Castle, offering panoramic views of the bridge and city below. Traditional cormorant fishing demonstrations occur on the Nishiki River during summer evenings, maintaining a practice dating back centuries. The nearby streets feature local specialties including Iwakuni sushi, a pressed layered sushi unique to the region, and soft-serve ice cream in various flavors.

The bridge is accessible from Iwakuni Station on the JR Sanyo Line, with buses departing regularly for the 20-minute journey to Kintai Bridge bus stop. From Hiroshima, the trip takes approximately 45 minutes by train. The crossing fee is ¥310 for adults and ¥150 for children, with combination tickets available that include the ropeway and castle admission for ¥970. Free parking is available nearby for those traveling by car. The bridge remains open year-round, and the crossing fee supports ongoing maintenance of this historic structure.
