Nishihama Beach

Nishihama Beach stretches along the western coast of Hateruma Island, Japan's southernmost inhabited island located in Okinawa Prefecture. The beach gained recognition in the late 20th century as tourism to remote Okinawan islands expanded, though the area has been known to local islanders for generations as one of the finest coastal stretches in the Yaeyama Islands. The name "Nishihama" translates directly to "West Beach," reflecting its geographic position on the island.

The beach's primary significance lies in its extraordinary natural beauty and ecological value. The coastline features pristine white coral sand extending approximately 1.5 kilometers, bordered by crystal-clear turquoise waters that reveal vibrant coral reefs just meters from shore. The beach sits at approximately 24 degrees north latitude, making it one of the southernmost beaches accessible to visitors in Japan. On clear days, the distinct gradations of blue in the ocean create a visual phenomenon locally called "Hateruma Blue," attracting photographers and nature enthusiasts from across Japan and beyond.

Visitors to Nishihama Beach can engage in swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing in relatively uncrowded conditions compared to mainland Okinawa beaches. The shallow coral reefs support diverse marine life including tropical fish, sea turtles, and seasonal manta rays, making snorkeling particularly rewarding even for beginners. The beach lacks the commercial development found on larger islands, offering a more secluded experience. The absence of light pollution on Hateruma Island also makes the beach an exceptional location for stargazing after sunset, with the Southern Cross constellation visible during appropriate seasons.

Reaching Nishihama Beach requires multiple transportation stages. Visitors must first fly to Ishigaki Island via domestic flights from major Japanese cities. From Ishigaki, a ferry service operates to Hateruma Island, with crossing times of approximately 60 to 70 minutes depending on sea conditions. Ferry schedules vary seasonally and can be affected by weather. Once on Hateruma Island, the beach is accessible by rental bicycle, scooter, or car, located roughly 5 kilometers from the main port area.
