Shuri Kinjo Town Stone-Paved Road

Shuri Kinjo Town Stone-Paved Road is a historic cobblestone street located in Naha, Okinawa that dates back to the 16th century during the Ryukyu Kingdom period. This 300-meter stretch of traditional ishidatami (stone-paved road) was constructed using Ryukyu limestone and served as a vital connection between Shuri Castle and the port areas below. The road represents one of the few remaining examples of original Ryukyu Kingdom infrastructure and was designated as a Japan Heritage site in 2016.

The stone-paved road holds significant cultural importance as part of Okinawa's unique Ryukyu heritage, distinct from mainland Japanese culture. The carefully laid limestone blocks demonstrate traditional Okinawan craftsmanship and urban planning techniques that were developed to handle the subtropical climate and frequent rainfall. Traditional gukaku (red-tiled roof) houses line portions of the street, creating an authentic historical atmosphere that reflects the architectural style of the former kingdom.

Visitors can walk the entire length of the stone road in approximately 15-20 minutes, experiencing the same path once traveled by Ryukyu royalty and merchants. The route offers opportunities to explore traditional pottery workshops, particularly those specializing in tsuboya-yaki ceramics, and small local shops selling Okinawan crafts. The nearby Kinjo-cho area features several well-preserved historical residences and stone walls that complement the main stone road experience.

Access the stone road via Yui Rail monorail to Shuri Station, followed by a 10-minute walk or local bus service. The site is located approximately 1 kilometer from Shuri Castle and can easily be combined with castle visits. No admission fee is required to walk the stone road itself, though individual shops and workshops may charge for products or experiences. Limited parking is available in the surrounding residential area, making public transportation the recommended option for most visitors.
