Tojinbo Sightseeing Boat

The Tojinbo sightseeing boat operates from the dramatic coastal cliffs of Tojinbo in Sakai, Fukui Prefecture, offering visitors a unique perspective of one of Japan's most striking geological formations. These towering basalt columns, formed through volcanic activity approximately 12-13 million years ago, create a rugged coastline that extends for about 1 kilometer along the Sea of Japan. The area has been designated as a Natural Monument and is considered one of Japan's three most scenic coastal views.

The sightseeing boats provide the optimal vantage point to appreciate the five-sided and six-sided basalt pillars that rise up to 25 meters above the sea. This geological phenomenon is extremely rare worldwide, with only three similar formations existing globally. The boat tours allow visitors to observe the intricate rock formations, sea caves, and arches that cannot be fully appreciated from the clifftop walkways. The 30-minute cruises navigate close to the cliff base, revealing the dramatic scale and unique columnar structure of the volcanic rock.

Seasonal conditions significantly impact the boat experience and operation schedule. April through October offers the most reliable service with calmer seas, while summer months provide the clearest visibility and warmest temperatures. Winter operations are frequently suspended due to rough sea conditions and strong winds from the Sea of Japan. Spring brings opportunities to see the coastline framed by cherry blossoms, while autumn offers dramatic skies and fewer crowds.

The boats depart from Tojinbo Marina, located adjacent to the main cliff viewing area. Regular departures occur throughout the day during operating season, with adult tickets priced at ¥1,400 and children at ¥700. The marina is accessible via Keifuku Bus from Mikuni Station on the Keifuku Mikuni-Awara Line, which connects to Fukui Station on the JR network. The journey from Fukui Station takes approximately 45 minutes by train and bus. Visitors should check weather conditions before traveling, as boats do not operate during storms or high winds, which are common during winter months.
