Tsuyama Castle (Kakuzan Park)

Tsuyama Castle, located in Tsuyama City in northern Okayama Prefecture, stands as one of Japan's most historically significant fortress sites. Originally constructed in 1616 by daimyo Mori Tadamasa, the castle was completed over a 13-year period and became the administrative center of the Tsuyama domain. At its peak, the castle complex featured an impressive 77 structures including the main keep, turrets, and gates, making it one of the largest castle fortifications in western Japan. The castle was dismantled during the Meiji Restoration in 1874, leaving only its magnificent stone walls and foundations.

The castle ruins now form the centerpiece of Kakuzan Park, which has become one of Japan's most celebrated cherry blossom viewing spots. The park contains approximately 1,000 cherry trees representing 30 different varieties, earning it recognition as one of the "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots in Japan." The massive stone ramparts rise in multiple tiers up the hillside, showcasing exceptional Edo-period stonework techniques. In 2005, a historically accurate reconstruction of the Bitchu Yagura turret was completed, giving visitors a tangible sense of the castle's former grandeur.

Visitors to Kakuzan Park can explore the extensive stone wall foundations that snake across the hillside, offering panoramic views of Tsuyama City and the surrounding mountains from the castle summit. The reconstructed turret houses exhibits about the castle's history and architecture. During spring, the cherry blossoms create spectacular viewing opportunities, particularly during evening illuminations. The park also features the Tsuyama Castle備中櫓 (Bitchu Yagura), where guides in period costume provide historical context and demonstrations of samurai-era daily life.

Tsuyama is accessible via the JR Tsuyama Line, with the journey from Okayama Station taking approximately 70 minutes. From Tsuyama Station, the castle is a 10-minute walk or short taxi ride. Admission to Kakuzan Park costs ¥310 for adults, with reduced rates for children and students. The park remains open throughout the year, with extended hours during the cherry blossom season in early April. Combination tickets are available for those wishing to visit multiple historical sites in Tsuyama.
