Drum Gate (Taiko-mon) - Matsumoto Castle

The Taiko-mon (Drum Gate) stands as a meticulously reconstructed entrance to Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's five National Treasure castles. Originally built in 1595, the gate was removed during the Meiji era and reconstructed in 1999. The restoration used 400-year-old Japanese cypress for pillars and 140-year-old pine for beams, demonstrating traditional Japanese carpentry techniques with materials scraped to match the original foundation stones.

The gate derives its name from the historical practice of using a large drum approximately 1.8 meters in diameter to signal important events, including the arrival of feudal lords and emergency situations. This drum served to notify both nobility and citizens of Matsumoto of the time of day and impending warfare. During the Edo period, the gate's walled compound functioned as a warehouse before its demolition in the early Meiji Period.

Visitors can explore the gate's upper floor, which houses a pictorial history exhibit of Matsumoto Castle and displays documenting the reconstruction process. Interactive elements include the opportunity to strike a taiko drum on display and pose with cardboard ninja cutouts. Archaeological discoveries from the site, including gilt ceiling tiles, are exhibited at the City Museum. The structure features defensive elements such as stone dropping windows, offering insight into medieval Japanese castle architecture.

The Taiko-mon opens to the public with free admission three times annually during spring, summer, and autumn seasons. Matsumoto Castle grounds are accessible year-round at no cost, though castle interior admission costs 610 JPY. The castle is located in central Matsumoto city within the Japanese Alps region. Direct train service operates from Tokyo's Shinjuku Station, requiring approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes travel time. The annual Matsumoto Taiko Drum Festival in July transforms the castle grounds into a performance venue featuring traditional drumming groups from across Japan.
