Futatsugame Beach

Futatsugame Beach represents one of Japan's most spectacular coastal destinations, featuring twin rock formations that resemble two giant turtles nestled together. Located at the northernmost tip of Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, these massive offshore rocks were formed 100 million years ago as the oldest geological feature on the island, created through gradual oceanic uplift due to crustal changes.

The beach has earned exceptional recognition, being selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Sea-Bathing Spots and awarded two stars in the Michelin Green Guide. The waters surrounding Futatsugame are renowned as the clearest in all of Sado Island, offering unparalleled swimming and snorkeling conditions.

The most remarkable feature of Futatsugame is the natural phenomenon known as a tombolo, where a sandy pathway emerges during low tide, connecting the mainland beach to the twin rock islands. Visitors can walk across this temporary bridge, experiencing waves rushing in from both sides. During high tide, the pathway disappears underwater, creating an ever-changing landscape that transforms throughout the day.

The surrounding area offers diverse activities including swimming, diving, and hiking along the 4-kilometer nature trail that connects Futatsugame to nearby Onogame, taking approximately one hour to complete. The trail follows dramatic cliffs of the Sotokaifu coastline, providing wilderness views and spectacular ocean vistas. Futatsugame is one of Japan's rare locations where visitors can observe both sunrise and sunset over the ocean horizon, making it particularly stunning during golden hours.

Beach facilities include public toilets with 3 urinals and 1 Japanese-style toilet for men, 4 Japanese-style toilets for women, plus separate changing rooms and shower facilities with hot water available. An on-site campground slopes gently toward the sea, while the adjacent SADO Futatsugame View Hotel provides accommodations and a tea lounge open from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM for non-guests.

Transportation to Futatsugame involves taking the Niigata Kotsu Sado Uchikaifu Line bus for approximately 70 minutes from Ryotsu Port, alighting at the Futatsugame stop, followed by a 10-minute walk to the beach. From the parking area, visitors must walk down to reach the actual bathing beach. Advance reservations are required by 5:00 PM the previous day for weekend and holiday bus services. No admission fees are charged for beach access, though accommodation and dining at nearby facilities require separate payment.
