Hill of the Buddha

The Hill of the Buddha is a striking architectural landmark located at the Makomanai Takino Cemetery in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. This unique site features a 13.5-meter tall Buddha statue designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando and completed in 2015. The statue itself was originally erected in 2000, but Ando's innovative design transformed it into one of Japan's most photographed religious monuments by enclosing it within a grass-covered hill with a dramatic 40-meter long tunnel entrance.

The cultural significance lies in Ando's architectural vision, which creates a profound spiritual experience through minimalist design principles. Visitors approach the Buddha through a narrow concrete passageway lined with 150,000 lavender plants that bloom purple in summer, gradually revealing the statue's head rising above the artificial hill.
