Manza Onsen Ski Resort

Manza Onsen Ski Resort sits at 1,800 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Shirane, an active volcano at the northwestern edge of Gunma Prefecture. This high-altitude location makes it one of the highest hot spring resorts in Japan, earning its reputation as "the closest hot spring to the stars." The resort combines skiing opportunities with some of Japan's most distinctive hot spring bathing experiences.

The area's natural significance stems from its highly acidic waters obtained from Mount Shirane, which are among the most sulfuric in all of Japan. Manza Onsen hot springs contain more sulfur than most other onsen in Japan, making them particularly prized for their therapeutic properties. The volcanic landscape creates dramatic scenery, with volcanic steam jets that rise from between the rocks on the mountainside visible from an observation deck near the bus terminal.

Winter visitors can experience powder snow that can only be found at 2,000 meters elevation, described as the smoothest and lightest in Japan's Northern Alps. The ski resort offers terrain suitable for all skill levels, from beginner slopes to advanced mogul runs. Snow is expected by mid- to late-December, with skiing possible through April. The relatively compact size of the ski area makes it manageable for day visits while still providing varied terrain and majestic mountain views.

The onsen experience remains the primary draw, with many hotels featuring open-air baths with sweeping views of the surrounding volcanic landscape. The cloudy hot spring baths feature a plentiful supply of mineral-rich water, creating an authentic Japanese bathing experience enhanced by the dramatic high-altitude setting.

Access from Tokyo requires approximately 2.5 to 3 hours using public transportation. Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Karuizawa Station (around 70 minutes), then continue by bus to Manza Onsen. The shinkansen costs about 5,910 yen for reserved seats, while the bus from Karuizawa to Manza Onsen takes about 2 hours and costs approximately 2,920 yen per person. Some hotels, including the Manza Prince Hotel, offer free shuttle bus service from Karuizawa Station with advance reservations.

By car, access from the south requires a toll road that costs 1,070 yen one way per vehicle, though overnight guests can often obtain return journey waivers from their hotels. Northern access routes close during winter due to road closures around Mount Shirane from early November. The resort is located approximately 80 minutes from the Joshin-etsu Expressway Usui-Karuizawa Interchange.
