Himeji Castle (also known as "White Heron Castle") is located in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the most representative existing castles in Japan and was among the first sites in the country to be listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage, a National Treasure, and an Important Cultural Property. The castle’s exterior is covered with pure white plaster, and from a distance, it resembles a white heron spreading its wings—a graceful and elegant sight that earned it its nickname. Famous for its defensive design, Himeji Castle’s internal structure is complex, featuring maze-like passageways and a main keep. It is an important example for studying defensive techniques of Japanese castles from the Sengoku period. Having survived centuries of war and natural disasters, the castle remains exceptionally well-preserved and is known as "Japan’s Number One Castle," often grouped with Kumamoto Castle and Matsumoto Castle as the "Three Famous Castles of Japan."
Himeji Castle is also one of the "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan." When the cherry blossoms bloom in spring, it is considered one of the most beautiful sights in the country, with the best viewing season from late March to early April. At that time, the castle’s snowy white walls and the romantic pink cherry blossoms perfectly complement each other, creating a classic spring scene in Japan—well worth a visit.
A standard admission ticket to Himeji Castle grants access to all of the main visiting areas, including popular spots like Sannomaru Square, Nishinomaru Garden, and Senhime Peony Garden. Starting from March 1, 2026, adult tickets for non-residents of Himeji will increase to ¥2,500, but currently, the price is ¥1,000.
The Himeji Castle moat boat ride is a popular activity to experience the ancient castle atmosphere while enjoying new perspectives of the castle walls and main keep. The tour uses traditional wooden boats modeled after those from the Edo period, steered by boatmen in kimono and straw hats, offering not only sightseeing but also rich Japanese historical ambiance.
The ride takes around 30 minutes, circling 1.4km around the inner moat and passing classic sights like the Sakura Gate Bridge, water gates, and stone walls. Passengers can look up at the towering 11-meter-high castle walls and, during spring, view cherry blossoms along the banks, making it an ideal spot for photographing the classic "Moat + Himeji Castle + Cherry Blossoms" scene. Boatmen provide live commentary on the castle’s history, bridges, and Edo-period life, making it a guided experience blending scenery, culture, and fun. Arriving early is recommended to avoid crowds—this is a memorable activity worth trying.
