Hirano Shrine, located in the northern part of Kyoto City, is an ancient shrine with over 1,200 years of history. It has been famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot since the Heian period. The shrine is deeply connected to Kyoto’s cherry blossom culture and attracts a large number of visitors every spring.
The cherry blossoms at Hirano Shrine bloom from mid-March to late April, with different varieties blooming in succession, resulting in an extended cherry blossom season. Notable rare varieties include “Kaidōzakura,” “Negozakura,” “Hirano-Imosezakura,” and “Teiwakana-zakura.”
During the cherry blossom season, entry to the shrine requires a ticket. The entrance fee is 500 yen, and the area is enclosed with fabric, slightly obstructing the view.
The shrine also hosts a night cherry blossom event until 9 PM, and the opening hours can be checked. Additionally, the “Oka-sai” (Great Flower Festival) is held annually on April 10th, making it one of the oldest cherry blossom festivals in Kyoto.
