Shiunso is a traditional Japanese ryokan located in the historic Tonosawa Onsen area of Hakone, positioned along the Hayakawa mountain stream. The entrance features a very large rock that has served as a famous symbol of Hakone-Tonosawa since the Edo period, and the property extends across a vast 13,000 square meter site. The Tonosawa hot spring area itself has a history stretching almost 1,300 years, and the region has been visited by notable historical figures including Hirobumi Ito and Soseki Natsume.
The ryokan sits in an area rich with natural features, including a suspension bridge called Kakuobashi and a bamboo grove created from the vast Moso bamboo growing on the premises. The property overlooks bamboo hills and is positioned next to the Hayakawa River, offering guests an appeasing view of the river and bamboo hill from the lobby.
Visitors to Shiunso experience authentic Japanese hospitality in traditional rooms with tatami flooring and futon bedding. The ryokan offers some of the largest guest rooms in Hakone, with both suite rooms and standard rooms available. Some suite rooms include private open-air baths where guests can enjoy hot springs throughout their stay. The property features three public hot-spring baths, including a large open-air bath along the mountain stream, and private-use baths can be reserved for a fee.
The hot spring water is an alkalescent simple hot spring that springs from the mountain in front of the hotel, with a mild texture and beneficial effects on the skin. Historically, this hot spring has been considered lucky for female fertility. The culinary experience centers on kaiseki cuisine prepared by the owner-chef using seasonal ingredients, with fresh fish and vegetables sourced directly from production areas. A specialty of the house is the handmade 100% buckwheat noodles that change monthly, and the owner crafts bamboo vessels from Moso bamboo cut from the property's grove.
The ryokan is located 5 minutes from Hakone-Yumoto station by bus or accessible on foot from Tonosawa station. It is positioned 3 minutes by car from Hakone Yumoto and approximately 90 minutes by car from Tokyo. Nearby attractions include Owakudani, about 25 minutes by car, Lake Ashi, about 30 minutes by car, and Forest Adventure Hakone, about 10 minutes by car. The property provides free WiFi and welcomes families seeking a peaceful retreat in nature.
