Engakuji

Engakuji Temple stands as one of Japan's most important Zen Buddhist temples, founded in 1282 by Regent Hojo Tokimune to honor fallen soldiers from both sides of the Mongol invasions. Located in Kita-Kamakura, this temple serves as the head temple of the Rinzai sect and ranks as the second most important of Kamakura's five great Zen temples.

The temple complex showcases exceptional 13th and 14th-century architecture and houses numerous designated National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. The grounds feature over 20 sub-temples spread across a hillside setting, creating a peaceful retreat from urban life. Notable structures include the Sanmon gate, the Butsuden (Buddha Hall), and the Shariden (reliquary hall), which contains what are believed to be teeth of the Buddha.

Visitors can explore the temple's historic buildings, participate in zazen meditation sessions held regularly for both beginners and experienced practitioners, and walk through carefully maintained traditional gardens that exemplify Japanese landscape design. Engakuji is easily accessible via JR Tokaido Line to Kita-Kamakura Station, requiring only a 2-minute walk from the station exit. The temple charges an admission fee of ¥500 for adults and ¥200 for children. Additional fees apply for special exhibitions in the museum and meditation sessions. The complex spans a considerable area, so visitors should plan for 2-3 hours to fully explore the grounds and appreciate the historical significance of this remarkable Zen monastery.
