Hida Tenmangu Shrine

Hida Tenmangu Shrine is located in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, approximately 12 minutes on foot from JR Takayama Station on the JR Takayama Main Line. The shrine was founded in 903 by Sugawara no Kanemochi, the third son of the renowned scholar Sugawara no Michizane, who was also a provincial governor. He established the shrine following the death of his father, creating it as a place of reverence and remembrance.

Sugawara no Michizane is enshrined here and celebrated as the god of learning. His reputation as a brilliant scholar and poet has made this shrine particularly popular among students and those preparing for entrance examinations who come to pray for academic success. The shrine is considered a direct descendant of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, one of Japan's most important Tenmangu shrines, adding to its spiritual prestige.

Visitors to Hida Tenmangu encounter several notable features on the shrine grounds. A stone statue known as the "wishing stroke cow" serves as a messenger of the Tenjin deity. According to tradition, stroking this cow while making a wish is believed to bring good fortune. The grounds are planted with approximately 50 plum trees, which bloom beautifully in spring, reflecting Michizane's well-documented affection for plum blossoms. The current main shrine building dates from 1992. The annual festival held on April 14th and 15th features a lion dance registered as a Folk Cultural Property.

The shrine maintains a peaceful atmosphere with fewer crowds compared to Takayama's central tourist attractions, making it an ideal location for quiet contemplation. The shrine office offers special goshuin stamps, including unique versions made on thin cypress wood that can be pasted into stamp books. There is no admission fee to enter the shrine grounds. The shrine is located at 2-30 Tenman-cho, Takayama City. Visitors arriving by car may park within the shrine grounds when visiting for worship, though a municipal parking lot is also available across the road.
